Glasgow Songs by Glasgow Artists

The Tree and the Bird and the Fish and the Bell was released in 1991 to acclaim the works of Oscar Marzaroli. It features many new and live versions of songs by Glasgow artists.

Oscar Marzaroli was a photographer who lived and worked in Glasgow. He died in 1988 at the age of 55, leaving behind a personal photographic record of post-war Scotland. Perhaps his most valuable gift was his telling record of the Gorbals community in the 1960s from which came his most famous shot, 'Golden Haired Lass'. This photograph and many more appear in his posthumously published book, Shades of Scotland (Mainstream).

The proceeds from this compilation album will go to the establishment of a permanent Oscar Marzaroli archive to be situated in his home city. In the long term it will be housed in the context of a gallery, dark room and workshop facility and will actively encourage young photographers in Glasgow.

As an appropriate fundraising project we asked contemporary artists from Glasgow to contribute songs set in, or referring to, the city. We would like to thank all of them for their imagination, time and generosity to make this record possible. It could not have been completed without the following people; everyone at Bridges & Woods, Paul Russel, Tim Bowen and Gordon Charlton at CBS, Cava Sound Workshops, John Kennedy and Ian Moss. Thank You.
